Windows Quick Tip #2 – Disable the Windows Error Report

Quick Tip

One of the most usesless features that Microsoft implemented into their operating systems, is their error reporting. I still get the question almost daily, asking whether or not they should or should “send the error report”. Supposedly Microsoft accumulates these errors into database and references them for future fixes and releases. How many of you think they actually do such?

If they did, the count would likely be in the billions. Most of us who work on computers on a daily basis, probably see this pop-up 5-10 times/day.

That’s why I’m teaching you how easy it is to disable it.

The instructions below are for both XP and Vista:

Windows XP
START>Right-Click on MY COMPUTER>PROPERTIES>ADVANCED>ERROR REPORTING>DISABLE ERROR REPORTING

Windows Vista
START>Search for and click “Problem Reports”>CHANGE SETTINGS>ADVANCED SETTINGS>Select OFF

Microsoft does use this information to fix issues in products, we have been relying on this information to improve the Windows OS for quite sometime. Although, it can seem like there is a black hole at times we do focus on the highest crashing applications.

Independent Software Vendors (ISV) have also been using this information to improve their products, ISV’s that are active in using Windows Error Reporting data have been seeing excellent results.

I can appreciate seeing the error dialogue can seem frustrating, but Microsoft and ISV’s actively use this information.

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/dcp20.asp – this is a link to the information we collect. The Send Error Report dialogue contains a link to the information sent, on Windows XP you can see the information in the Application Event Log: http://blogs.msdn.com/wer/pages/faq.aspx#weronpc – link to finding Windows Error Reporting data on all OS Versions since Windows XP.

The steps you have submitted above will work, but on Vista you can also do this through the Windows UI.

Here is additional information about the user consent levels for Windows:

I never see these kind of issues (if that is what you want to call them)
With the latest software and drivers and resisting the urge to stuff around with things in the OS then you shouldn’t see this popup at all.
You must use bad software and have a very outdated setup.
