As I mentioned in my Sunday Finds, I just recently purchased an iPhone. I must say, I knew that I was going to be addicted, I just didn’t realize how much. I’m a Windows guy, and I was hoping Windows Mobile 7 would be released much sooner then later. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. So, I decided to make the plunge, drop my sorry Verizon phone and switch to AT&T and get the 3G iPhone. Two days later, I’m still hopelessly addicted, with no sign of slowing down. Dozens and dozens of apps, e-mail at your finger tips, IM like SMSing, visual voicemail, full internet browser, Wi-Fi, on and on and on. The problem with this addiction, is the battery life.

I am quickly finding out that I am having to plug the phone in on a nightly basis, and it’s already getting somewhat annoying. So, I did some digging and I found a great video with several iPhone battery saving tips. I’ve listed some of the big ones, and you can see the rest in the below video.

Turn off Wi-Fi when it’s not being used or needed.

Turn off 3G when it’s not being used or needed.

Turn down the screen brightness. I have mine extremely low, and I can still see everything great.

Press the sleep button on top, as soon as you are done using it.

If you are continuously forgetting to put it to sleep, make sure auto-locking is set fairly low. 1 or 2 minutes?

Turn off Fetch or Push e-mail, if you aren’t using either one of them.

Turn off phone vibration while ringing. Only have vibration on while it’s on silent.

Avoid downloading apps while wireless.

Just this past week, Google announced one of the easiest and what is sure to be one of the most popular iPhone apps in the App Store. They’ve essentially removed the sometimes annoying touch screen keyboard and integrated voice recognition to their search capabilities.

Every enhanced ability of Google search appears to be part of the application. Whether you want to find out the weather in a particular location, the movie times in your local theater or even the built-in calculator. It looks like an amazing product from our amazing friends at Google, and it’s just one more reason to talk you into buying an iPhone. I would assume that this same capability will be built-in to their G1 phone with TMobile as well.

Here is a great tour of the new app’s ability:

One the many things that comes along with putting together and setting up multiple servers, is the keyboard and mouse requirement. There are many situations when you can’t remote into a machine and you need to work at the server itself. The problem is, you don’t want dozens of different mice and keyboards lieing around to get tangled and to confuse you as to what is connected to what. That’s where our old friend the KVM switch comes in.

However instead of using multiple mice and keyboards, why not use the great open source product, called Synergy. Synergy allows you to share one, mouse and keyboard, with several different PCs, on several different monitors. So, this really doesn’t replace an entire KVM switch, as you’ll still need some type of viewing for the other PCs/Servers. The amazing part about it, is it’s cross platform compatibility. It works with Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac OS X. Here is a quote from Synergy on what it’s true power is:

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It’s intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).

Redirecting the mouse and keyboard is as simple as moving the mouse off the edge of your screen. Synergy also merges the clipboards of all the systems into one, allowing cut-and-paste between systems.

And here is an amazing video, displaying its full potential:

Download Synergy
